PACHY ON THE MEND

I THINK I MENTIONED IN AN EARLIER POST THAT MY FRIEND DID A BIT OF SURGERY ON THIS PACKY. IT HAD DEVELOPED SOME ROT AND WE THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO LOSE IT. WE’VE OWNED IT FOR 12 YEARS AND WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY UNFORTUNATE.

BUT NATURE SENDS US LITTLE SURPRISES ---- I’M SURE MY SISTER HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT. IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY YOU CAN SEE THE NEW GROWTH ON BOTH SIDES OF THE HEALED WOUND WHERE I'VE DRAWN A CIRCLE.

Anonymous said...: I've never heard of a packy. I don't even know what the full plant looks like as these are close ups. Is it a cactus? There are some serious spines there, but I know that doesn't always mean cactus.

I love how plants heal. They forever astound me. I also have plants that I've had 12 years. They are amazing "beings".; August 20, 2008 at 6:08 PM

Pachypodium is a plant genus that belongs to the dogbane family , Apocynaceae . Pachypodium comes from Greek pachy (thick) and podium (foot), hence meaning thick-footed . All Pachypodium are succulent plants.; August 20, 2008 at 7:25 PM

My sister dale’s garden is a magical path lined with fruit trees, gardenias, day lilies, and many other flowering plants. When you enter her garden you immediately are captivated by it’s tropical feel even though it is located in the California Desert.

It all began as a tribute to the only sister I had, a sister only two and a half years younger than me. Dale was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and passed away two years later after a tango like dance with the disease.

The pictures on the website were taken over a three year period documenting the beauty and life that goes on after her death. I continue to take pictures almost daily as the beauty unfolds. A whisper of Dale’s ashes grace the garden and I believe that she is the caretaker of every bulb, plant, tree and bird that flourishes. It started in a small area and then expanded to include a koi pond, grape arbor and vegetable garden. Dale’s nurturing touches every living thing on our property.

Please enjoy the beauty that I hope I have captured with these pictures. May they bring you joy and a sense of calmness if you are stressed dealing with an illness or life’s everyday challenges. May Dale’s memory bring joy and hope to others.
