THE PIANO

WHEN I WAS A KID MY PARENTS HAD ME TAKE PIANO LESSONS. I TOOK THEM FROM THE AGE OF EIGHT UNTIL I WAS THIRTEEN. AT THIRTEEN I DECIDED THAT BOYS WERE MORE IMPORTANT. I HATED TO PRACTICE THE PIANO AND SO MY PARENTS GAVE UP AND I WAS FREE---FREE.

ABOUT A YEAR AGO WE HAD THE CHANCE TO BUY A USED PIANO AT A GREAT PRICE. I WAS VERY EXCITED AND I HAD SAVED MY SHEET MUSIC FROM EARLIER YEARS. I FOUND A WONDERFUL PIANO TEACHER AND WAS VERY PLEASED THAT I REMEMBERED SO MUCH. EVERY WEEK I WAS TAKING A PIANO LESSON AND PRACTICED ABOUT AN HOUR A DAY.

PIANO LESSONS HAD GONE UP DRAMATICALLY IN 40 PLUS YEARS. I DON’T KNOW IF IT’S JUST ME BUT EVERY NIGHT WHEN I WOULD GO TO SLEEP THE MUSIC WOULD PLAY IN MY HEAD KEEPING ME AWAKE. I NOTICE THIS WITH MY IPOD ALSO-----MUST BE SOME STRANGE SYNDROME. ANYWAY---WITH THE ECONOMY BEING WHAT IT IS AND THE MUSIC PLAYING IN MY HEAD I STOPPED THE LESSONS. NOW I SIT DOWN AND PLAY THE PIANO ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK---BUT NEVER FOR VERY LONG---CAUSE I DON’T WANT THE MUSIC IN MY HEAD !!!

I play piano but it's an interesting story. My mother sent me for lessons when I was 4 or 5 and I hated it and didn't go back after the first lesson. Then she tried when I was in 11 or 12 and I wouldn't even play on the first lesson so the teacher told Mom not to send me back.

Then my last year in the rainforest I started to dream the most amazing music and I sat down and played like someone who'd had 8 - 10 years training. I simply played what I heard in my dreams...two months later I was performing. I don't perform anymore...not much. But I still dream music and play on my piano the music I dream at night. I even got to where I could memorize the music in my sleep and remember it in the morning. It is a huge gift in my head.

I studied sound one point and I do know that music and sound can open us up in ways that talking doesn't always do. Something similar though: I have lived almost my whole life without TV but I was watching movies sometimes but 2 years ago I gave the DVD player/TV (it only played movies - no TV) and all the movies away because if I watched a movie it ran through my head all night and I didn't dream or sleep peacefully. It's like my mind had to run it off. I also compose music and vocal songs and when I play them at night before bed they often go through my head...and I feel too excited to sleep. But that's because I LOVE singing and composing songs. Hope to put some on my website at some point.

This was an interesting piece and that is a lovely piano. Mine is a 1940 spinet that had never been used and has a sound board made out of one piece of wood instead of laminated wood. An amazingly clear sound to it.

Hugs,
Robin
