PET WARNING

JUST WANTED TO GET THIS OUT TO MY PET LOVING FRIENDS. I AM PART OF A GROUP OF WONDERFUL PEOPLE THAT KEEP ME AWARE OF IMPORTANT NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION AND DANGERS TO OUR 4 LEGGED FRIENDS. I'M GLAD THEY SEND ME THIS INFORMATION. TWO WEEKS AGO I ALMOST BOUGHT THIS STUFF--I AM SO GLAD I DIDN'T. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE PUT ON MY EMAIL PET ALERT PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT REQUESTING SO.

Forwarded with permission.....
Hey, everyone!
I am usually not one to send out emails to masses of people, but this
time I really need to. I want to warn everyone about a pet product that
is being sold out there that can be fatal to dogs and cats. It is
called Breathalyser, and it is a liquid that you add to their drinking
water to help cut down on plaque and bacteria and bad breath. This
product has an ingredient in it called Xylitol, which is safe for humans
and is typically used in chewing gum, but can kill animals.
I made the mistake of using this product in my 4 dogs' drinking water
and my oldest dog, Dean, who is 17 yrs. old and only 6 lbs., got deathly
ill from it. It causes damage to the liver, problems with blood
clotting, dehydration, and a serious drop in blood sugar levels. Dean
is now recovering from this, but could easily have died if I had not
found out about the Xylitol poisoning as soon as I did.
Once again, it is called Breathalyser, and it is made by a company in
Canada called imRex Inc. Xylitol is listed as the third ingredient.
The information regarding the dangers of Xylitol has been confirmed on
Snopes.com <http://snopes.com/> : http://www.snopes. com/critters/

Please pass this along to everyone you know who loves their pets!
Thanks!

I don't know about the specific product but xylitol is made from Birch (Birch Syrup is the new "all natural" "in" thing for pancake syrup). Xylitol also is used to sweeten Tom's of Maine's toothpaste. You really have to read labels! Yes, it is very toxic to dogs.

The antidote:Get the dog to the ER Immediately. If it's possible to do (like someone in addition to the driver in the car) on the way to the Emergency Vet, make the dog vomit (gag him). As little as two sticks of sugarfree gum is severe poison. I am thinking that I might do this, though I cannot call it veterinary advice, it's just what I might try to do myself: try to get lots of sugar/sugar water (not chocolate) into the dog asap before his/her blood sugar goes to zero due to the insulin released by the xylitol. Once the dog starts to vomit, or seize, or stagger, or have any sign of lowered level of consciousness, it's too late for this, and trying to get fluids into him orally can result in aspiration anyway. Hopefully by then I would be running into the dog ER shouting for help.

Wikipedia:
Dogs ingesting foods containing high doses of xylitol (greater than 100 milligram of xylitol consumed per kilogram of bodyweight) have presented with low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) which can be life-threatening.[21] Low blood sugar can manifest as loss of coordination, depression, collapse and seizures as soon as 30 minutes after ingestion.[22][23] Intake of very high doses of xylitol (greater than 500 - 1000 mg/kg bwt) has also been implicated in liver failure in 8 dogs, which can be fatal.[24]

(I bet this is where the Breath produce story originated: )
A recent study demonstrated that a water additive for animals containing xylitol was effective in reducing plaque and
calculus accumulation in cats. ^ {Clarke, D.E. (2006)

I just received this warning and did some further research myself to verify that Breathalyser made by Imrex DOES contain xylitol. The Snopes reference talks about the dangers of xylitol to dogs and cats which is also contained in some sugarless gum. I've never used the Breathalyser product, but I know many people do. So, it is dangerous.

I read this article today and I can't even begin to express my disgust. http://www.NaturalNews.com/023710.html
