ONE OF MY BEST STORIES

MY HUSBAND AND I WERE TRAVELING TO ORLANDO, FLORIDA AND THE FLIGHT WAS AT LEAST 4-5 HOURS. WE BOTH CAME PREPARED WITH ENTERTAINMENT----HE HAD A BOOK AND I HAD MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA (BOOK ON TAPE) WHICH HAD JUST BEEN RELEASED. A FEW DAYS BEFORE OUR DEPARTURE I LISTENED TO ONE OF THE TAPES TO DETERMINE IF IT WAS INTERESTING. I DID ENJOY IT AND WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO THE STORY. SO HERE I AM KICKING BACK AND RELAXING WHILE LISTENING TO THE TAPES------ SUDDENLY THE AUDIO GET DISTORTED. MY FIRST REACTION IS TO REWIND THE TAPE A BIT---MY SECOND REACTION IS TO CHECK THE BATTERIES---MY THIRD REACTION IS TO CURSE. AFTER A LOT OF CURSING I CHECK THE TAPE TO DISCOVER THAT IT HAS SNAPPED. I TURN TO MY HUSBAND WHO IS ENGROSSED IN HIS BOOK AND EXPLAIN THE DEAL----HE LOOKS AT ME AND SAYS “THAT’S TOO BAD” THEN GOES BACK TO READING HIS BOOK. I CALL FOR THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT---IS THERE ANY SCOTCH TAPE ON BOARD THIS PLANE? I ASK IF THERE ARE POST IT’S----ANYTHING THAT IS STICKY? NOTHING-----I CAN’T BELIEVE IT. THE FLIGHT HAS JUST STARTED AND IF I SKIP THIS TAPE I WILL MISS IMPORTANT PARTS OF THE STORY. SO….NOT ONE TO GIVE UP---I RACK MY BRAIN AND GRASPING AT STRAWS TAKE OUT A MEDJOOL DATE (A HEALTHY SNACK I’D PACKED). SEARCHING THROUGH MY BAGS (THAT WAS SEVERAL YEARS AGO—WHEN YOU COULD TRAVEL WITH SHARP OBJECTS) I FOUND MY POCKET SWISS ARMY KNIFE AND EYEGLASS REPAIR KIT. NOW I AM READY TO GO TO WORK. KEEP IN MIND THAT I AM IN A MIDDLE SEAT----ON ONE SIDE IS MY HUSBAND AND THE OTHER SIDE A MAN WHO KEEPS GLANCING AT ME TO SEE WHAT I AM DOING. I REMEMBER SEEING MY DAD SPLICE TAPE FOR HIS REEL TO REEL TAPE RECORDER-----SO I PULLED OUT A PORTION OF TAPE AND MADE A CLEAN CUT---THEN USING MEDJOOL DATE STICKUM I PUT THE TWO ENDS TOGETHER AND SLOWLY ADVANCED THE TAPE PAST THE SPLICED AREA. IT DIDN’T WORK----SO I TRIED IT AGAIN AND THIS TIME IT WORKED----I WAS ABLE TO LISTEN TO THAT TAPE AND THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THE BOOK. I CAN’T TELL YOU THE SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT IT GAVE ME. THE BEST PART WAS THE LOOK I GOT FROM BOTH MY HUSBAND AND THE GUY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF ME.

This IS a great story. I loved it. I have this huge smile on my face right now and can so relate to this. The biggest feeling I had reading it was I felt really really proud of you. I felt like I knew you.....like you were me. Good for you. I miss being able to take those type of things on planes for those very reasons. I used to travel with a full mini survival kit...so in case the plane went down in the alligator infested swamps of Florida I'd be prepared (if I survived the crash). LOL
